Scubapro iPhone Dive Logbook App

Scubapro in partnership with DNA BLU have released their very own Dive Logbook application for the iPhone which is available for free download.

This great app allows users with a SCUBAPRO UWATEC dive computer to display their dive information and profiles on their iPhone. This will allow you to easily carry their logbook everywhere with them, what’s more you can re-live and share your underwater experiences at the touch of a button.

As well as being able to transfer dive profile data (from SmartTRAK and DataTRAK), from a PC to your iPhone the Dive Log Book has several other great features:

Simply Scuba Break In - £500 Reward!

During the early hours of Sunday morning/ Saturday night our warehouse was broken into and a fair few wetsuit and drysuits were taken before the alarms were sounded which disturbed them.

They managed to break through an outside wall with a sledge hammer and pickaxe to make a hole that was big enough for them to climb through.

It's likely that the thieves will try to re-sell the items they stole and most of them have serial numbers on them. We're offering a £500 reward to anyone who has information which leads to their arrest and conviction.

The Scuba Diving community is quite small, so if you do hear or see anything which seems too good to be true on sites such as eBay, at your local dive club or even car boot sale, it's quite possible it could be our stock.

Scubapro 2010 / 2011

The beginning of October this year has brought about the announcement of a number of new Scubapro products including two new second stages to be paired with their existing first stages, the A700 regulator in a new black finish, a redesigned and also a new drysuit, two new bags and a number of new accessories.

A700 Black Tech

The MK17 & MK25 A700 is now available in a new black glossy finish. The new PVD (Physical Vapour Desposition – the method used to coat the regulator body) finish increases the surface scratch resistance and gives it a very stylish polished look. The Scubapro flagship second stage still delivers outstanding performance in all conditions.

C200 & C300 Second Stage

The new C200 is an entry level second stage that is paired with the MK11 first stage and provides a small and simple design resulting in a lightweight and reliable regulator. The Optimized Flow Design™ valve helps to achieve excellent performance and breathing response whilst the new full sized anti-scratch front cover prevent scruff damage to the regulator. The C200 is also available as a Octopus with a yellow cover and 100cm hose.

The C300 is a mid level unbalanced second stage, but thanks to the completely new mechanism design the C300 performs as well as the balanced S555 second stage. The C300 is available paired with the MK11, MK17 & MK25 first stages. As with the C200, the C300 has a full sized anti-scratch front cover and features Scubapro's new Optimized Flow Design™ to increase performance but also sports adjustable inhalation resistance allowing the diver to customise their diving experience.

Evertec Drysuit

The Evertec is a high quality, heavy duty trilaminate drysuit, the material choice ensures durability and quick drying but also helps to keep the overall weight down. The suit features a telescopic torso to improve flexibility without excessive material causing discomfort and drag. There are elasticated suspenders fitted on the inside and a crotch strap on the outside to prevent the suit from moving around when worn. A diagonal front entry zip eases self closing and donning with a nylon flap to help protect the zip from damage. A warm neoprene neck collar helps to keep heat in whilst a thigh cargo pockets aid storage. Flexible neoprene socks gives footwear flexibility allowing the diver pick their choice of boot type such as rock boots or neoprene boots whilst Si Tech valves finish the specification off with quality and reliability.

Cabin Bag

The new Scubapro cabin bag is a large, sturdy bag that is fitted with wheels and telescopic handle for easy manoeuvrability through the airport. Its 51cm x 23cm size fully complies with IATA regulations.

These are available for pre order now, but stock is not expected to be released until January 2011.

New Diver Survey from DDRC

The Diving Diseases Research Centre (DDRC) has launched a new survey to find out divers drinking habits.

The survey which can be carried out online, aims to gain a better insight into alcohol consumption of UK recreational divers.

The DDRC research team would appreciate participation from all divers in the project to get a better understanding about the general consumption of alcohol by divers and what implications this may or may not have on safety in diving.

To take part in the DDRC survey simply head to www.ddrc.info/survey where you will find the 'Alcohol and Diving' survey. All the information you give to the DDRC will be confidential and untraceable to the diver.

Recall of Apeks WTX BCD

Aqua Lung / Apeks has been made aware of a case of a poorly retained oral inflate button that has worked loose from an Apeks WTX inflator. If the button were to come off, the spring behind the button would also come off thereby removing the tension needed to keep the valve closed. If this were to occur in the water, it could lead to a leak of the BC contents out of the oral mouthpiece.

Do not dive with WTX BCD until it has been inspected by an authorised Apeks dealer. If you require any further information please contact our Customer Service Department.

New Intova IC-10 10MP Digital Camera

Intova have just launched the new IC-10 waterproof digital camera to replace the IC-800. The IC-10 is the same camera as the 800 but has an additional 2MP and is the same price!

The IC-10 kit comes with the digital camera and underwater housing that is waterproof to 180 feet (just under 55 metres) which makes it fantastic for taking images when diving and snorkelling. It also makes it good in other damp conditions like skiing or at the beach and pool.

Mares NEMO Air Safety Recall

Mares Diving has announced a product safety recall involving the company's NEMO Air scuba diving computer. Under certain circumstances, the O-ring can fail and cause a slow leak of breathing gas through the Quick Connector, which could require a diver to surface quickly and face possible risk of injury or running out of air.

If you bought your NEMO Air from us then please call our customer services department on 0844 567 70 70 and they will be able to advise you what to do next.

If you didn’t buy your Mares NEMO Air through us then you should contact your local authorised dealer or service centre.

Coming Soon – Suunto Zoop Dive Computer

In 2004, Suunto released their entry level dive computer, the Gekko which has been extremely successful. The Suunto Gekko offers a fantastic computer for a very reasonable price, in actual fact it carries all but a few features found on the more expensive Suunto Vyper computer.

Suunto are always developing and creating great new diving computers and have just announced the release of the Suunto Zoop for the end of March which will be replacing the Suunto Gekko. The Zoop, like the Gekko is still aimed for the entry level market and will be good value for money. The noticeable difference at a glance is its bold colour, but the Zoop will feature a PC interface which will allow your dive profiles to be downloaded using Suunto’s Dive Manager.

With the addition of the PC interface, this has meant that the Zoop is more expensive than the current Gekko and will be entering the market at £199.00.

With this in mind, it now means that there is less of a jump between the new Suunto Zoop and the big brother computer the Vyper in both terms of money and features. The only extras on the Vyper are the backlight and dive simulator. Some may say you don’t get much more if you opt for the older Vyper, but the choice is yours!

Help To Stop Shark Finning!

Because of finning, tens of millions of sharks die a slow death every year. Finning is where people hack off the sharks fins and throw the rest of their live body back in the sea. Because obviously the sharks cannot swim without their fins they either drown, starve to death or are eaten alive by other fish. The demand for shark fins comes from the Asian delicacy of shark fin soup where they use the fins to give a gelatinous bulk to the soup, they are not used for their flavour as they are pretty tasteless.

Finning is not only a inhumane thing to do but is effecting many other species because of the breakdown in the food chain. Other species are on the brink of extinction which we really effect the underwater world as we know it.

New Poseidon Dive Watch Range

Poseidon has introduced a new range of diving watches which include the Chrono, Date and Classic with each collection having a choice of bracelet, leather or black silicone strap. The choice doesn't stop there though, each version also comes in a choice of black, white and yellow faces!

The Poseidon Chrono Dive Watches are the top of the range with a Chronograph movement, rotating bezel, luminous hands and index for easy reading and can be used down to depths of 200 metres/660 feet. The Posedeidon Date Watches are slightly cheaper with Miyota 2115 day/date movement instead of Chronograph movement but has the same features as the Chrono. The Classic Poseison Dive Watches are the cheapest of the range which has Miyoto OS20 Chronograph movement but can only be used to depths of 100 metres/330 feet.

The bracelet versions are slightly more expensive than the leather versions, with the silicone strap being the cheapest available in the range.

Oceanic Launch The New Veo Dive Computers

Oceanic has launched a new range of Veo Dive computers which each, uniquely, use the Dual Algorithm allowing the user to synchronise their Veo to any other dive computer on the market meaning they can synchronise with a diving buddy. The Dual Algorithm system allows you to choose between Pelagic DSAT which is suitable for maximising dive time for multi-level, recreational diving. The Pelagic Z Plus can be chosen for recretaional diving and the algorithm increases the conservative factor by 15-20% and uses the Buhlmann ZHL-16c database which allows repetitive, cold water diving at altitude.

The Veo 1.0 is the entry level computer which has been updated with a new lens and liquid crystal display. The Veo 2.0 has everything that the Veo 1.0 possesses but also has a deep stop feature, flashing alarm indicator and pc douwnload.
The Veo 3.0, although still basic, is the top of the Veo range and has the most features, such as an improved user interface, gauge dive timer and 2 gas feature.

The Oceanic Veo 1.0 and Veo 3.0 are now available with the Veo 2.0 available from the end of December.

Divegenie.com uses satellite technology and various weather datasets to produce the free forecasts. In addition to the website, you can also download the forecasts and maps directly to your mobile phone or iPod, meaning that you can view the forecast maps en-route to your dive or snorkelling site. They also have an apple.com approved iPhone and mobile web-app so you can easily view the forecasts using any internet enabled mobile phone. All forecast maps can also be viewed in Google Earth and Google maps.

Bladefish Seajets Available Now!

Bladefish offer 3 models of Seajets which are diver propulsion vehicles that take all the work out of scuba and snorkelling.

The 5000 model can reach depths of 50 metres and can be used for up to two hours depending on which of the three speeds you wish to choose, with the fastest reaching 3.75 mph!

The funky, green 2000 model is the entry level model of Seajets. Along with the other models, the 2000 is compact and lightweight and runs on a rechargeable lithium ion battery. We had a great review posted at Simply Scuba recently so we wanted to share it with all our blog readers! We emailed Steve and asked him to tell us more about his dive operation.

Scuba Steve’s Diving is an independent full service PADI Five Star Resort Dive Centre at the North West end of the beautiful island of St Lucia, just 5 minutes from most of the Hotels and Guesthouses in the Rodney Bay area. Scuba Steve’s provide free transfers between Hotels and the Dive Centre in their own air conditioned mini bus as part of their service.

Scuba Steve’s was established in 2006 by British couple Stephen and Shirley Smith, both passionate about diving, to give their visitors a top quality diving experience at an affordable price and to showcase how wonderful the diving is in St Lucia. The couple dive every day with their guests to ensure that they get the best possible diving experience and enjoy the diving as much as they would want to if they were on a vacation. Scuba Steve’s specialise in small groups and offer a very personal service to all of their guests.

The diving in St Lucia has something to offer divers at all levels of experience from beginners to avid dive nuts. They have over 25 dive sites ranging in depth from just 5M to over 40M. They have reefs, walls, and wrecks; drift dives and much more, all with a multitude of colourful coral and tropical marine life to enjoy.

The Diving season in St Lucia is all year round. The St Lucia water is calm, warm and very blue with a temperature range of 26 - 29 degrees celcius. Visibility varies from 6M to over 60M depending on the site and weather conditions. St Lucia is easy to get to with direct flights from the USA, UK and Canada and there is a wide range of accommodation to suit most tastes and budgets.

Beginners are especially welcome at Scuba Steve’s and their experienced insured PADI Instructors teach a large range of PADI Dive Courses from entry level right up to Instructor level. They even have a special program for children aged 8 – 10 years, where they get to dive on one of St Lucia’s beautiful Coral Reefs with their own Instructor to a maximum depth of 2M.

For the non-divers in your party, St Lucia have some of the best snorkelling and sightseeing anywhere in the Caribbean. They also have a wide range of activities to participate in, including shopping, rainforest zip lining, parascending, drive in volcano, sulphur springs, botanical gardens, water skiing, horse riding, nature walks, rum distilleries, championship golf courses and much more. Maldives President Holds Meeting Underwater

The President of the Maldives, Mohamed Naheed and his Cabinet held an underwater meeting to highlight the effects of global warming to the low-lying Indian Ocean nation.

Nasheed and the other cabinet members who were taking part had been practising their slow breathing technique to get into the right mental frame for the meeting which was held about 5 metres underwater in a blue-green lagoon on a small island used for military training.

The Maldives stands about 7ft above sea level, and the effects of global warming means that they could be completely wiped out.

The ministers spent half an hour on the sea bed communicating with signals and white boards where President Naheed and his Cabinet signed a document calling global cuts in carbon emissions.

The IQ 900 Zen from Tusa is their brand new dive computer packed with features that all fit on your wrist like a watch, making it perfect for not only diving but also to wear around the office or in town.

The Zen can be operated as a watch, air computer, Nitrox computer, digital depth gauge and timer or as a free dive depth gauge and timer. It has a large wording display making it easy to view and a backlit display further improves readability in darker waters.

The Zen features Tusa's Deep Stop function which improves safety by activating when your dive exceeds 80 feet, or 24 metres for more than one second. When ascending the Zen will display the suggested stop depth for two minutes, and although this is not mandatory and does not affect remaining No Decompression limits of the dive it is recommended.

‘My Stroke Didn’t Stop Me Diving’

Hey guys. We came across this article and found it really inspiring. At 78 years old and suffering from a stroke Larry has been left partially paralysed and can only get around in a wheel chair. He has now found his chance to go back diving with the Scuba Trust, giving him the freedom of the underwater world which he can’t get on dry land. Good for him I say!
